On February 16th, 2016 Hillel hosted a screening of the film Above and Beyond. The movie chronicles the lives of American World War II veterans who volunteered to serve in Israel's War for Independence and also aid in the creation of the Israeli Air Force.
University of Rhode Island student, Ben Nachtigal watched the film and shares his thoughts below.
I loved "Above and Beyond" because of my own family's personal connection to Israel when it first became a state. My grandfather was a Holocaust survivor who escaped from Poland and got to Palestine. He fought in Israel's War for Independence.
I always think of the IDF and particularly Israel's air force as being super strong. It was cool to see in this film how the air force really started from nothing and how these American Jewish WWII vets played such a big role in getting it off the ground (so to speak).The film gave me such a sense of pride about how Jews from around the world banded together to fight for Israel's survival. Above and Beyond taught me how difficult it was to start Israel’s own air force. After seeing the film I have an even greater appreciation for Israel’s independence.
